Seth knows how to party

It isn’t an official celebration weekend, as there’s no fancy Aretha Franklin concert, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still celebrate week one of classes being done!

Here’s what’s going on this weekend:

Friday January 29

HOCKEY! The women’s hockey team and the Greek Community invite you to the game at 7pm, and free skate following the game. If you bring a canned food item (to be donated to Joseph’s House and Shelter in Troy) to the game, you get free food, free hot chocolate, a free raffle ticket, and free skate rental for the free skate after the game.

Basketball at ECAV when the Men take on Union College at 8pm. RPI currently has the best overall record in the league. [facebook]

Zombies take over 308 when UPAC Cinema shows Zombieland. 7pm, 9:30, and midnight. Still $2.50.

Clothe-A-Child Date Auction takes place in the McNeil Room at 9pm. Get Freakout tickets. Always a good time. [facebook]

RPI Casino Night is being held in Mother’s tonight from 6-10pm. Check out their cool prizes you could win on the facebook page. [facebook]

It’s Troy Night Out! Take the (warm!) west shuttle from the Union downtown (it makes an extra stop in Monument Square between 5-10pm). The list of activities can be found here. If you’re looking to donate to Haiti and get some good bowling in at Uncle Sam’s Lanes, $10 lets you play all night (9pm-12am). [facebook]

The EMPAC season kicks off with “Jeremy Wade: there is no end to more”. Mr. Wade “delves into Japanese kawaii (cute) culture – from the infantile fluff of Hello Kitty to the doe-eyed teenage love stories of anime – and its ubiquitous global influence. Through dance, stories, animation and video, Wade peeks under the slick, silly surface of kawaii to reveal its more insidious subtext, while exposing our relationship to the “endless more” that exists just beyond our grasp.” $5 for students, at 8pm in the Theater. Sorry to scare you, but it is Friday the 13th!

Friday, November 13

Well, first of all, it’s Friday the thirteenth.  Do something spooky.

It’s also Hug a Jew Day.  RPI-Sage Hillel is hosting their weekly Shabbat Dinner at 6 PM in the Phalanx Room (Union 3502).  It’s free, and they’re serving an italian-style dinner.  You can find more info at the [Facebook]

You know you can’t resist seeing men dressed as women at the Rensselaer Pride Alliance Fall Drag Show at 7 PM in West Hall. Admission fee- $3 advance; $5 at door for RPI Students. $5 for general public in advance; $7 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased in the DCC and Union the week prior.  [Events Calendar]

The men are up in the North Country this weekend (catch them on WRPI 91.5 or online), but the Women’s Ice Hockey Team is battling the Yale Bulldogs tonight at 7 PM in the Houston Field House.  Women’s games are free! [RPIAthletics]

EMPAC never fails to provide a show you can talk about the next day.  We’ve heard this one is one for the books too: “Punky funk meets Futurism and homespun electro in this paradoxical grouping of artists from far ends of the musical spectrum.”  Check out New Nothing: Skeleton$, Luciano Chessa + Dan Deacon at 8 PM.  EMPAC tickets are $5 for RPI students. The weekend looks something like this.

After a brief hiatus, we have returned with what’s going on this weekend!

Friday November 6

It’s been kinda cold lately, so why not head down to Rev Hall and check out The Fiery Furnances tonight at 7:30. Tickets are $15. Opening acts are Cryptacize and Dent May.

EMPAC and associated cool stuff pt. 1: Is a talk and workshop by Mark Downie of the Openended Group. From what we hear the talk is going to be pretty cool and the software open-source programming environment called FIELD and weekend long workshop on it is supposed to be pretty life changing (if you’re into creating digital art).

FREE HOCKEY!!!! for students who wear black to the Men’s Hockey game tonight. We’re playing Yale (the defending champions) so be sure to bring extra spirit.

Cars and Ski Equipment are on display at the Empire State Plaza. Auto Show and Ski and Snowboard Expo respectively. Both are until 9pm tonight, and then continue for the rest of the weekend.

Do it for the children! Tonight the Rensselaer Christian Association is sponsoring a concert in the McNeil Room with proceeds going towards Love146, an organization that fights child sex slavery around the world. Performing are The Peace from New York City, as well as the Rusty Pipes, Sheer Idiocy, the Campus Serenaders among others. Recommended donation is $2, and there are raffle tickets for some pretty awesome prizes too.

This weekend, there's table tennis and water polo... but not both at the same time

A very slow weekend.  Everyone is recovering from Homecoming/Reunion.

Friday October 9

More than meets the eye…Transformers Revenge of the Fallen is playing at UPAC at 7, 9:30, and midnight in DCC 308.  $2.50

RPI is hosting a Water Polo Tournament, and the first game is at 6:30.  The games (matches?) continue through Sunday.  The schedule is posted on the Facebook event.

Saturday October 10

CSSA hosts a Table Tennis tournament in the Armory from 9 AM to 3 PM.  More information here.

The Nigerian Student Association is hosting its annual Green and White Affair from 6 to 9 PM in Russel Sage Dining Hall.  $10 at the door.  Info on the Facebook event.

Men’s hockey plays their first official season home game at 7 PM against University of New Hampshire.  Houston Field House.

LXA is hosting Keeping Wyatt, a “good show for a good cause.”  Doors at 7:30, show at 8.  $5. Info on Facebook.

See the stars, as usual, at the Hirsch Observatory from 8 to 10.  If the weather’s bad, go to 2C30 of J-ROWL.  More information here.

Friday October 2

Get a job! at the career fair.  It begins at 10 AM in the Armory.  More information is available at careerfair.rpi.edu.

If you’re into esoteric physics lectures, check out “Toward the ultimate laws of nature: dark matter, supersymmetry, the LHC, and string theory,” a lecture by Gordon Kane of the University of Michigan at 3:30 PM in Sage 3303.

This isn’t on campus, but Starbucks’ Via Taste Challenge begins at 5 PM, and they’re offering free coffee.

Join Hillel celebrate Sukkot with Shabbat dinner at 6:30 in the Shelnutt Gallery.  Free.

Women’s hockey opens their season at 7 PM in the Houston Field House as they battle the Wayne State Warriors.  Free.

UPAC is showing The Taking of Pelham 123 at 7, 9:30, and midnight.  $2.50. DCC 308.

Get your Fifteen Minutes of Fame at the Ground Zero Open Mic Night at 8 PM in the basement of Nugent Hall.  Free.

Dirty Paris, Timbre Coup, and Deja play at Revolution Hall downtown starting at 8 PM.  $10.

If you’re a fan of RPI’s female sports teams, this is a good weekend for you.  Lots of home games.  If not, then there’a always UPAC, EMPAC, and GZ.

Friday September 25

Women’s soccer battles Hamilton at 4 PM on Renwyck Field.

EMPAC is always good for a Friday night event.  Catch Slow Wave: Seeing Sleep’s opening exhibition tonight starting at 5 PM.  Apparently, there’s a sleepover on Saturday night as well.

It’s that time of the month! Troy Night Out is tonight!  It runs from 5 until 9ish.  Many stores in Troy will be open late, and you can catch free shuttles from the Union.  Just hop on the West Route and get off in Monument Square.  This month is especially fun because they are also celebrating the quadricentennial of Hendrick Hudson’s discovery of the Hudson River.

ACHA Division II Hockey starts their season tonight at 7 PM against Union in the Field House.  Free

UPAC Cinema is playing The Proposal at the usual times of 7, 9:30, and midnight.  $2.50.  DCC 308.

Hindu Temple Society of the Capital District and Gujrati Samaj present Narvati 2009 Garba & Dandia Raas at 7 PM at the Hindu Cultural Center 450 Albany Shaker Road, Loudonville.    $5 student tickets.

La Unidad Latina presents the 14th Annual Cultural Pride Night. It’s a free show that starts at 7:30, with performances from various cultural groups. The Keynote Speaker is Thomas Webber- Author of Flying Over 96th Street: Memoir of an East Harlem White Boy.

Ground Zero presents Br’er in the basement of Nugent Hall.  $3.  Power Animal and Ben Esposito perform at 8 PM.

Friday, 9/18

I’ve heard it made people cry… “Up” is playing at UPAC Cinema tonight at the usual times: 7, 9:30, and midnight.  Tickets are $2.50

If you want to laugh, Sheer Idiocy is performing at 8 PM in Mother’s in the Union.  They’re the improv comedy group, and it’s usually a pretty good time.  FREE.

Get your 15 minutes of fame at Ground Zero.  They’re having their “BiWeakly Open Mike,” which I assume is a biweekly open mic.  Free.  In the basement of Nugent Hall (use the entrance closer to Bouton Road).

There doesn’t seem to be too much going on this weekend (unles you’re rushing a fraternity). Maybe it’s because it’s the first weekend with real homework, maybe it’s because it’s one of the last weekends before fall officially starts.  Whatever it is, take some time to go for a walk downtown and enjoy looking at campus while things are still green.

Might be a good weekend to visit Grafton Lakes to take a stroll... because it won't be green for long!

Friday September 11

Shabbat Dinner and services with RPI Hillel at 6:30 PM in Union 3510.

Gotta get the anger out somehow. Why not bash a car at Delta Tau Delta at 4:30? 133 Sunset Terrace.

Out of this world… as UPAC usually is.  Star Trek is playing in DCC 308 at the usual times of 7, 9:30, and midnight, for the usual price of $2.50

If you haven’t seen the ads on every wall on campus, the New Nothings series at EMPAC kicks off with Boredoms: BOARDRUM with Deerhunter.  They describe it as “two bands, nine (make that ten) drummers, and an evening of noise/music that’s experienced not just with the ear but the entire body.” 8 PM at EMPAC.  $5 for RPI students.

The Introduction Dance is being held by RPI Ballroom in the McNeil Room at 8 PM.  $3 for RPI Students.

If only it was the case every time...

There isn’t too much going on this weekend! A few good events, but it might be a good opportunity to spend time outside or get to know your roommate better. Maybe catch up on some reading in the sun or toss the frisbee around with friends.

Friday 9/4 and all weekend

Get ready for the new book by catching up on the film version of the first book. (UPAC’s showing Angels and Demons at 7, 9:30, and midnight for $2.50 in DCC 308.)

Enjoy the Theater! The Delta Xi cast of Alpha Psi Omega, the National Theater Honor Society at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, presents Tom Stoppard’s comedy about the relationship between past and present and between order and disorder and the certainty of knowledge. Friday and Saturday at 8pm.

More the Fair Type? The Columbia County Fair is ongoing through Monday. Check out the schedule here.

Cirque du Soleil is at the Times Union Center through Sunday with their touring show “Alegria“.

So Lady GaGa isn’t coming to campus this weekend (sorry Dr. Palazzo), but Fall Out Boy, Cobra Starship, All Time Low, Metro Station and Hey Monday are! I guess they’ll have to do… Here’s what’s going on the rest of this lopsided weekend.

Friday 4/24

Take a ride downtown on the free Troy Night Out Shuttles, leaving from the Union hourly from 5-9. (fbook)
