The Best GM Week Political Team at RPI
It’s that time of year again! Election fever has descended upon RPI this year even earlier than usual. The DCC’s windows are covered in posters in the shape of candidates’ names, the CII is once again a seven story billboard for a political party, and all over campus one can find banners adorned with campaign slogans. Yes, GM Week is upon us, and the battle to represent you, the students, has commenced. But who to vote for? Here at RPInsider we’ve assembled the best RPI political team on the internet (even better than last year’s) to help you decide just that.
Just as we did last year, we asked each of the GM/PU candidates by email to submit a short statement about themselves and why we should endorse them. For the GM candidates, we received responses from Ben Hunt, Andrew Neidhardt, and Michael Zwack. For PU, responses came from Mike Spitz and Stefan Dicker.
Based on the statements submitted, general campaign activity, and the debates, we have finally reached a decision:
Find out why below.

Hello readers,
I just wanted to give you a quick update and explanation for our recent downtime. We upgraded to Wordpress 2.9 a few days ago, and in the process had to update the MySQL version of our databases. I could go on and give you all the boring details, or just know that when we were upgrading, stuff broke, and we took care of it. RPInsider is back. And now to resume our regularly scheduled programming…

Our stats for the last year
You see the month’s archives listed on the right side of the page there? There’s 13 months listed now, which means that we’ve been online, serving you up-to the minute RPI news and opinions for over a year now! We’ve had:
over 39,000 visits
74,000 page views
and 13,000 visitors
on our 232 posts, and 363 comments
As we enter year 2, we hope you’ll continue your journey with us! As always, thanks so much for reading. We couldn’t do it without you!

This post is a reflection.
So we set off just under a year ago with the altruistic goal of changing the way people got information at RPI. We wanted people to care again. We held the ideology that pervasive information would be able to change the way people acted. We wanted people to know what was really going on, and be well informed about it. We wanted to make people care about the crazy stuff that was going on. Why do a blog? As students, we need up to date, reliable news. The Poly does decent journalism, but their online arm doesn’t really cater to the world the same way we aim to. Breaking news at RPI happens pretty often, and there’s no place to go to find out more and continue the discussion. Why wait for the Poly on Wednesday when you can hop online now and find out? (Especially if you’re bored in class
) We also try and allow people to create their own discussions on the ACB, a valuable forum which is a favorite feature of the site on other college blogs like ours.
But on the news side, we do our best to deliver the facts. However, we aren’t afraid to lace our articles with a bit of opinion either (perhaps you’ve noticed). Hopefully people think we’re a little funny too. More people in our generation get news information from Jon Stewart than the newspaper, so we thought we’d try and target that market at the ‘tute.
We’re pleased to announce the introduction of a new feature of RPInsider. A while ago, we mentioned the comic strip Enjuhneer written by Jenny Blanchard ‘09. We thought it would be cool to have a comic on our site (especially one about a tech school written by an alum), so we got in touch with Jenny. Now every Saturday we will be posing all of the previous week’s Enjuhneers! We hope you will find this a welcome addition to the site. As always, we’d love your feedback!

Those hands? That's us.
So if you were on campus today, perhaps you picked up a copy of the Poly. You may also have noticed that in honor of Earth Week, they changed the color of the header from red to green, in an apparent attempt to show how environmentally friendly they are.
Well let me just remind you that THIS news source doesn’t use paper in order to reach its audience. We don’t chop down trees, or even use recycled paper to print upon. We should add a little statement to the bottom of each page that says “No trees were harmed in the publishing of this news”. RPInsider: The greenest news source on campus.
Maybe we should challenge the Poly to a green-off. Any thoughts?
We’ve made a few small changes in the past couple of weeks that you might like to know about. We took away the Event Calendar, in part because we weren’t updating it enough, and it was sitting mostly empty. We just added the latest tweet from the Grand Marshal’s twitter account below the Troy weather in the sidebar, as well as a Popular Tags section towards the bottom.
These are some small changes that we hope will bring more useful features to you, our loyal readers.
Stay tuned, as there are some more sitewide changes that we are planning on implementing in the coming weeks. If only we didn’t have so much work that we should be doing…

We thought about making this our new tagline, but decided against it.
Dear Readers,
If you read the editorial section of today’s Poly, you might have stumbled across our name! Poly Editor-In-Chief Cara Riverso mentioned us in an editorial about the reliability of blogs. She did call us “surprisingly well informed” though. Cara goes on to point out that “some of the comments published are not completely factual.” This is true, and we had thought about this possibility prior to starting our blog. We made an active decision to not censor the comments on the site. We feel strongly that people are allowed to have and express an opinion (however misinformed they may be.) We do our best to publish the most accurate news we can, and hope you enjoy what commentary we add. As Cara said, blogs should not be treated as “be all, end all” news sources, just part of the news puzzle, trying to get at the truth. We’re glad you’ve founds us, and we hope you keep coming back!
That being said, we are always looking for contributing authors!

The Editors

Class would be so much more interesting if Ms. Frizzle was your professor
Well, classes start back up today! Hope your break was good! Try and pay attention in your classes, because before you know it you’ll be reading your favorite blog during class instead of doing that in-class activity your professor wants you too.
This week is “Consultation Week,” so if you haven’t met your advisor yet to go over classes for next semester, (or even met them in the first place,) then you should do so to make sure you are on track. (I still have to email mine…)
We’ve decided to extend the spring break contest another week. Really? Only five suggestions? Submit the song you want Dr. Jackson to dance too, and we’ll redo the video! (Thanks again Christopher!)
There are only 7 weeks left in the semester. Hang in there, the next day off we get is GM Midweek, April 1st, a Wednesday.
