This Week’s Poly: Digitized and Searchable

April 29th, 2010

We got a little frustrated with the fact that the Poly’s website was last updated on March 24 (they’ve been very busy, as you’ll see below!) because their articles this week about the elections are very interesting and give a good range of what’s going on inside the Union.  So what did we do?  We put our competitiveness aside and digitized the latest issue of the poly for your reading pleasure.  The text is searchable, too!  For elections info, see pages 1, 3, 8,9, 10, and 11.  Some great journalism and great opinion pieces.  Also, for some fun, try searching for “Hunt” just to see how many times it appears (we found 44).

Incubator Center Change Creates Buzz Around Campus

February 12th, 2010

I guess this is what it looked like when there were still trees in front of it!

It’s pretty rare that the average RPI student ventures over to the J-Building.  To be honest, for a while I thought it was a hospital because of the white border around the door and red sign that says “Incubator Center.”  Being an ignorant freshman, I saw that and though it must be some sort of laboratory.  Now I’ll have even less reason to go in there.  RPI announced that is is changing the mdoel for the Incubator, and removing the current businesses.

According to the Times Union article, Laban Coblentz was quoted as saying:

The question is how coordinated are all of these operations at Rensselaer that have to do with business start-ups.  Our feeling was that we could do better.

The Rensselaer Polytechnic mentioned that Belwo and Intellidemia will both be moving to a location downtown so that they can remain close to the Institute and their student interns.  That brings up an interesting positive benefit to Troy:  perhaps some of the empty building space downtown will finally be utilized for productive purposes.

The TU Article quotes businesspeople who are calling the closure a “travesty,”  but we’re going to reserve judgment.  Mr. Coblentz is probably right to say that the model needs to be revamped if it hasn’t been changed since 1980.

RPInsider greener than the Poly!

April 23rd, 2009
Those hands? That's us.

Those hands? That's us.

So if you were on campus today, perhaps you picked up a copy of the Poly. You may also have noticed that in honor of Earth Week, they changed the color of the header from red to green, in an apparent attempt to show how environmentally friendly they are.

Well let me just remind you that THIS news source doesn’t use paper in order to reach its audience. We don’t chop down trees, or even use recycled paper to print upon. We should add a little statement to the bottom of each page that says “No trees were harmed in the publishing of this news”. RPInsider: The greenest news source on campus.

Maybe we should challenge the Poly to a green-off. Any thoughts?

Read today’s Poly?

March 18th, 2009
We thought about making this our new tagline, but decided against it.

We thought about making this our new tagline, but decided against it.

Dear Readers,

If you read the editorial section of today’s Poly, you might have stumbled across our name! Poly Editor-In-Chief Cara Riverso mentioned us in an editorial about the reliability of blogs. She did call us “surprisingly well informed” though. Cara goes on to point out that “some of the comments published are not completely factual.” This is true, and we had thought about this possibility prior to starting our blog. We made an active decision to not censor the comments on the site. We feel strongly that people are allowed to have and express an opinion (however misinformed they may be.) We do our best to publish the most accurate news we can, and hope you enjoy what commentary we add. As Cara said, blogs should not be treated as “be all, end all” news sources, just part of the news puzzle, trying to get at the truth. We’re glad you’ve founds us, and we hope you keep coming back!

That being said, we are always looking for contributing authors!

Love,
The Editors
