Uncovered: Kevin Marshall

January 26th, 2010

I bet this photo isn't on his ID card

An African proverb says that “it takes a village to raise a child.” Well, we wanted to take a closer look at the little village that is our campus in Troy. We decided to peek into the lives of people who spend their working days at RPI, those that aren’t the ones assigning homework, or grading your papers. This interview series is called “Uncovered” and we hope to learn more about those that are creating our campus ecosystem. We’re still looking for more interviewees, so if you have any suggestions, please let us know!

In this Uncovered, we interview local personality Kevin Marshall, who also happens to work in the Union in the Campus Card Office.

Hidden Gems: RPI’s Employee Orientation Video, RPI Watch, Laban in Austria

May 23rd, 2009

Just found this one on RPI’s HR site:  A nice piece of spin called the Employee Orientation video, (presumably shown to all new hires.)

We aren’t RPI’s first anonymous student blog: RPI Watch was around for a little bit in ‘05 and ‘06. Their tagline? “Your guaranteed apathy cure (as if you care)” I like our fake tagline better. The blog even gotten written up in the Times Union.  (Note: their tips email account has been deleted; our email bounced back.)

For you Laban fans out there: He has previously MC’ed the IAEA 50th Anniversary Ball in Vienna, Austria. On another note, does anyone know if he is related to the chocolate makers?

Read today’s Poly?

We thought about making this our new tagline, but decided against it.

We thought about making this our new tagline, but decided against it.

Dear Readers,

If you read the editorial section of today’s Poly, you might have stumbled across our name! Poly Editor-In-Chief Cara Riverso mentioned us in an editorial about the reliability of blogs. She did call us “surprisingly well informed” though. Cara goes on to point out that “some of the comments published are not completely factual.” This is true, and we had thought about this possibility prior to starting our blog. We made an active decision to not censor the comments on the site. We feel strongly that people are allowed to have and express an opinion (however misinformed they may be.) We do our best to publish the most accurate news we can, and hope you enjoy what commentary we add. As Cara said, blogs should not be treated as “be all, end all” news sources, just part of the news puzzle, trying to get at the truth. We’re glad you’ve founds us, and we hope you keep coming back!

That being said, we are always looking for contributing authors!

Love,
The Editors

Other RPI Student Blogs

February 2nd, 2009

It has come to my attention that the Student Sustainability Task Force has created a blog to discuss their projects on campus (a lot of great stuff, by the way).  Be sure to check out their 63 page study on RPI’s current sustainability.

Another blog which has apparently been recently revived is the Student Senate blog. It’s supposed to help you stay up to date on Student Government goings-on (if you’re really that interested).
