Hunt Wins Appeal; RNE Ordered to Release Results

April 30th, 2010

The J-Board has ruled that RNE must release the results of the April 22 Elections. Just a note: this decision may be appealed to the Review Board, made up of 2 faculty members, 1 administrator, and two students to be appointed by the Grand Marshal, subject to the approval of the Student Senate.

The question is: will RNE release the results tonight, as ordered by the Judicial Board, or will they wait for a pending Review Board case? Will Zwack have to appoint two students to the review board? Will someone else appoint two students? Will it be appealed at all? We don’t know! Do you?

Free Burritos on 4/20!

April 19th, 2010

When you get hungry tomorrow afternoon, head over to Bombers Burrito Bar (on Lark Street in Albany, or State St. in Schenectady) because they’re giving out free burritos between the hours of 11am and 4pm. The reason? A few of their customers/friends have come into a bit of hardship recently (both need chemo treatment), and are using the event to try and raise some money for them.

From Matt Baumgartner, Owner of Bombers: “To anyone interested, please feel FREE to get burritos at both places if you’d like, just show up with some bills in your hands to give to these fine folks.”

Quick News Update

March 22nd, 2010

Dr. Jackson is a speaker at The Economist’s conference entitled “Innovation: Fresh Thinking for the Ideas Economy” where she and “Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich … will square off against conservative economist and blogger Tyler Cowen and Electronic Frontier Foundation Founder John Perry Barlow.” The conference aims to “to challenge established thinking about what innovation is, where it comes from, and how to make it work.” [prnewswire]

You would think GM week began tomorrow with the way the student government candidates are campaigning. It would seem like this Facebook group, brainchild of Anasha Cummings has kicked campaign season into high gear, taking the dialogues online in an attempt to lay everything on the table. It’s a great idea (and we’re a little jealous we didn’t think of it ourselves!) Hopefully this online forum will allow a bit of the political BS to be avoided. You should definitely check it out if you have any interest in making an informed decision about who to vote for this election, (in addition to taking our endorsement into account of course!)

RPI has announced the commencement speaker for this year, and it is Peter Orszag, one of the nation’s leading economists and director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. We’re pretty excited! We’ve heard of this guy before! [AOA] [RPI]

OK Go will be headlining Tulip Fest on May 8th in Albany. The show is free! No word yet on whether or not they’re bringing their treadmills.

Troy is putting together a campaign of its own, one to try and get Google to lay its beautiful fibers of ultra-high speed broadband in Troy. For more information, visit troygle.org or their Facebook group.

It’s not always so sunny in Troy…

September 29th, 2009
Troy is be beautiful, especially when there's sun!

Troy is beautiful, especially when it's sunny!

It’s not always so sunny in Troy… but we were curious about how the Capital District compares to other places in the United States.  We were hoping that we would find some comforting data that we could be worse off, but as it turns out, according to city-data.com, Albany ranks 88th on the list of least amount of sunshine for all cities in the Nation over 50,000.  But, it turns out that we have sunshine for 52.7% of the time!  Unfortunately, the months with the lowest sunshine are those when it is most cold.  Check out the graph below!

Four completely unrelated stories

This is a new perspective on the world...

This is a new perspective on the world...

News out of the Office of Undergraduate Education:
While having all students study abroad is still apparently a goal of the Institute, REACH an “initiative that ultimately will require all of its students to have an international experience as a requirement for graduation,” it seems that they have recently closed off some opportunities. Now students that go abroad on an unaffiliated program will NOT be able to transfer their earned credits back to RPI, according to the Study Abroad FAQ’s. Why would the school do this? Your guess is as good as mine. ($$$?) It’s ironic, as they just recently changed the name of REACH from “Rensselaer Engineering Across Cultural Horizons” to “Rensselaer Education Across Cultural Horizons.” I guess RPI just wants it to be their horizons.

News out of an awesome blog (All Over Albany):
Little Italy is hosting a stickball tournament on September 26th. For more details, click here. (We’ve heard these tournaments are pretty fun!)

News out of the Times Union:
No, Angelina Jolie isn’t back to baby snatching in the area, but Will Ferrell’s new movie will be in town soon. They’re casting for extras this Saturday at the Crowne Plaza. More info here.

News out of the trees:
Alby is definitely still alive.

UAlbany Fountain Day Blows GM Week Out of the Water

April 27th, 2009
RPI students apparently tend to wear much more clothing for their mass student events. Photo on the right from the Troy Record.

RPI Students tend to wear much more clothing than their UAlbany counterparts for their mass student events.

So you thought GM week was awesome?  Check out UAlbany’s Fountain Day.  Every year to celebrate the first time they turn on their fountain, marking a spring rite of passge, and naturally they throw a huge party.   This year they had record crowds, numbered at 10,000.

GM Week Committee:  We want a party like THAT!  You’ve got almost a year to plan it.  Everyone here knows we can outdo UAlbany, so let’s get to it!

Could you pass the… Salt Update

April 27th, 2009

That’s right!  Angelina Jolie was really here in Albany to film her new movie, Salt.  It was totally worth you being late to the train station to pick up your roommate, because Albany will be famous now.  The shooting isn’t over, though, so please refer to the Times Union website if you plan on using Exit 3 off of 787.

So far, no snatched babies have been reported, but we’re still on edge.

Capital District Babies Hold On Tight

April 21st, 2009
This looks promising...

This looks promising...

All Over Albany pointed out that the notorious baby snatcher Angelina Jolie might be in the Capital District in the coming weeks, filming scenes from the upcoming spy movie Salt. Filming will center on the ramps around the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany, presumably being used for a car chase. Due to there being tons of production equipment, famous people, and those gigantic trailer parks for said famous people, they are closing down various roads during these times for most days between April 23rd- May 4th. Field trip anyone?

The Times Union has an article about it here.

Specific dates and closures below.
