Grouper (Law) Hearing

No, this meeting isn't about fish, it's about off-campus housing being restricted by the City of Troy.
Elizabeth sent us an email giving us a heads up on another grouper law hearing in Troy. They’re thinking of limiting the number of unrelated people living in a house to 3 or so. Here’s our previous writeup about the first hearing. The second hearing is tomorrow night (Thursday 3/5) at 7pm in City Hall, located downtown at Broadway and River, (in Monument Square.) Word on the street is that there was not one student at the last meeting to speak against the possible law. If you think that Troy should not impose a rule limiting housing to 3 unrelated people living under one roof, go downtown for the meeting, support students, and make your voice heard!
The meeting Thurs. night is a City Council meeting at which they will be voting on the extension of a moratorium regarding the addition of bedrooms to an existing house/apartment.
The legislation referred to above is not a grouper law and does not limit the number of people allowed to reside together. Additionally, it is not limited to student housing. Residents from throughout Troy have expressed concern and support for this legislation. It attempts to set guidelines on minimum space requirements and provide a better way of regulating issues related to fire safety for the occupants. I’m sure there are plenty of students who’ve experienced an “iffy” off-campus living environment. The goal with this legislation is to attempt to decrease the number of those units — an improvement for both potential occupants and the surrounding neighbors.
Constructive student input would certainly be welcome during the development of this legislation. If interested, touch base with the people from TAP during the Council’s meeting Thurs. night.
