Do you think it’s supported by the President and members the Cabinet?

So I was reading the Poly yesterday and I got to page 14. I saw a large ad for the 18 on 86 Winter Carnival. I really like the idea, and think that it probably will be a lot of fun. (What is a synthetic skating rink?!) There is something that bothers me every time I hear about it though. Specifically in the Poly ad, it says the following: “Sponsored by the President and the Cabinet and supported strongly by personal donations from the President and members of the Cabinet.”
You think we don’t get it the first time? You have to say it twice? You’re making it happen. Got it. Paying out of your pockets to do so? Got it.
But what funny timing… Perhaps it is coincidence (it is certainly a possibility,) but if Dr. Jackson wasn’t being criticized for exorbitant compensation would this still have happened with this much backing? Could the administration have used their generosity towards something more pragmatic? The Student Senate attempted to hold it’s own winter carnival (although on a smaller scale) last winter, and it wasn’t perceived to be a great success.
I’m grateful that the administration is taking a direct interest in student life by – sponsoring/paying/making extreme personal sacrifices - so that we can have this carnival. I’ll certainly be there. But there is something about this timing that makes me think that there are ulterior motives. But who knows? Maybe this is all just poor timing.
