Quick News Update

March 22nd, 2010

Dr. Jackson is a speaker at The Economist’s conference entitled “Innovation: Fresh Thinking for the Ideas Economy” where she and “Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich … will square off against conservative economist and blogger Tyler Cowen and Electronic Frontier Foundation Founder John Perry Barlow.” The conference aims to “to challenge established thinking about what innovation is, where it comes from, and how to make it work.” [prnewswire]

You would think GM week began tomorrow with the way the student government candidates are campaigning. It would seem like this Facebook group, brainchild of Anasha Cummings has kicked campaign season into high gear, taking the dialogues online in an attempt to lay everything on the table. It’s a great idea (and we’re a little jealous we didn’t think of it ourselves!) Hopefully this online forum will allow a bit of the political BS to be avoided. You should definitely check it out if you have any interest in making an informed decision about who to vote for this election, (in addition to taking our endorsement into account of course!)

RPI has announced the commencement speaker for this year, and it is Peter Orszag, one of the nation’s leading economists and director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. We’re pretty excited! We’ve heard of this guy before! [AOA] [RPI]

OK Go will be headlining Tulip Fest on May 8th in Albany. The show is free! No word yet on whether or not they’re bringing their treadmills.

Troy is putting together a campaign of its own, one to try and get Google to lay its beautiful fibers of ultra-high speed broadband in Troy. For more information, visit troygle.org or their Facebook group.

    Is there going to be anyway for us to see Shirley speak or is it just news just so we’re aware?

    Who gives a shit what Shirley has to say?

    As for the elections, who gives a shit? Nobody is going to change anything that Shirley doesn’t want changed. Oh, but let’s be sure to waste as much fucking paper as we possibly can in the meantime! GREEN CAMPUS! GREEN CAMPUS! GREEN–oh, look at all these papers scattered all over the pavement because they were taped to the walls so poorly–CAMPUS!

    I must say, the Troygle website is hideous. How can they appeal to the foundation of the Internet with something like that?

    @poop
    I agree that a lot of those ridiculously repetitive signs are a waste of paper. Why would you need to have the same sign so many times in a row? The signs don’t even have any information on them.

    Jeez… ease up guys.

    It shows school spirit to have all those signs everywhere! There are plenty of other ways to be green which are more effective anyhow…

    Also @poop and @JayWalker,

    If you look closely, you’ll notice that most of those signs are printed on the backs of scrap paper (old exams, syllabi, test review sheets).

    Have a positive attitude and try and enjoy this place! (and be prepared to back up what you’re saying before you get embarrassed like you JUST did.)

    That’s what I was thinking!

    @Eric
    I actually did notice that they were printed on the back of scrap paper. When you walk inside the buildings where the signs are posted you an see the backs of all the signs. If you really want to get into it you could say that them printing on the back of scrap paper is a waste of scrap paper but we both know thats silly because scrap paper is not being heavily used (yet). So I do commend the poster makers on their use of scrap paper. What I do feel though is a strong sense of spam. I am fine with posters all over the place and I do really like the new set of posters Zwack put up with different results on each. What I don’t like though is the repeated posters with the same lack of information on each one. 20 posters in a row that just say a candidates name are annoying to me. They don’t tell me anything.

    Also I wanted to say that I do have a positive attitude and I do enjoy this place. I am also prepared to stand behind anything that I say ever. I’m not embarrassed by being wrong and I’m not afraid to speak my mind. I also just realized that the part of your comment this is in response to was probably not directed at me.

    The excessive postering makes the campus looks like shit, plain and simple. At a time when you’re showing prospective and accepted students the campus, they have to look at wasteful crap covering up the windows and buildings? On top of the resources used? “Hey guys, I have a great idea, let’s print off our signs with FULL BLACK BACKGROUNDS, that’s really great!”
    It’s a good thing I didn’t visit the campus before I chose RPI, this kind of stupid pandering makes me sick.
