Spotted: New Hall Hall Apartment

February 17th, 2010

"Good fences make good neighbors"

Most of you have probably seen this already, but in case you haven’t been to Freshman Hill lately, this is a photo of the new apartment which is attached to Hall Hall.  As part of the CLASS Initiative, the Assistant Deans in Residence Life will live in residence halls.  To facilitate this, they’ve built apartments on Hall Hall and Crockett Hall.  What are your thoughts about staff living in residence halls?

It looks like a fortress that got tacked onto Hall Hall. Instead of living with us to inspire community, it looks like they’re armoring against having to live in the vicinity of us. One could expect to see archers on the parapets (if there were parapets).

It really looks like they’re trying to bring us all together. How better to do so then erecting walls?

Nice concept, but I fail to see much difference beside having a local RD. I appreciate the mentality, but there are far more important and changing aspects of the college that could be worked on.

Oh, what a lovely little, uh, potting shed of a building. It looks like it got caught in a gust of wind and has just blown into the side of Hall Hall… probably just resting for a few minutes before flying somewhere else.

Kudos to the architects. I hope they got paid well.

I’m not sure about the concept, but the additions themselves are extremely ugly. I’m kind of wondering why RPI didn’t bother making them look like they belong with any of the other buildings on freshman hill at all.

As someone who lives three rooms away from this apartment, I have yet see the AD use the interior door. There’s little interaction with the building which was the reason for the building. Nothing about the tumor matches the rest of the building. At all. I also find it a little creepy how they have to keep all the shades shut just to have a semblance of privacy. Coming up the stairs you get a great view, sitting at my computer you get a view, its pretty open. Except for the fence that Junior mentioned. Thoes are my thoughts
