Re:   Celebration Weekend Update

In a few days, the university community will come together for
“Celebration Weekend: A Tribute to the Transformation of Rensselaer.”
The program presents a special opportunity for our community to
highlight our achievements during the first decade of The Rensselaer
Plan.

On December 4 and 5, a series of events will provide members of the
community with opportunities to celebrate the transformation of
Rensselaer through presentations, tours, and interactive sessions with
faculty, students, and administrators, and visiting artists showcasing
breakthroughs in Rensselaer research and learning environments. We also
will recognize the achievements of President Jackson and members of the
Institute community who have worked to implement The Rensselaer Plan.

Event Highlights

At a breakfast on Saturday, December 5, President Jackson will share her
thoughts on our transformation through a multimedia presentation on our
10 years of progress. Additional highlights of that session will be the
premiere of a new video featuring many members of our community to
chronicle the changes that have occurred, and a chance to recognize the
philanthropic support of individuals who have made the success of The
Rensselaer Plan possible.

Other highlights of the weekend will include Saturday afternoon sessions
on four topics that capture the outstanding work being done by our
faculty. You may choose among the subjects of “Biotechnology and the
Life Sciences,” “Computational Science and Engineering,” “Energy and the
Environment,” and “Media, Art, Science, and Technology.”

For those who would like a closer look at our emerging programs in
student life and internationalization, I call your attention to programs
on Friday, December 4, focusing on “Rensselaer Education Across Cultural
Horizons” and “Clustered Learning, Advocacy and Support for Students.”

As you consider these options, please visit the Celebration website at
http://www.rpi.edu/about/celebration/index.html for more information,
and be sure to register for the events you plan to attend.

Concert Details

For those who reserved tickets for the Aretha Franklin and Joshua Bell
concerts through the celebration Website, tickets for both concerts will
be available for pickup at the Curtis R. Priem Performing Arts Center
(EMPAC) box office on December 4 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Also, on
December 5, those who have not already done so may pick up Joshua Bell
tickets from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the EMPAC NIRVE Center. For those
attending the Joshua Bell concert, formal attire is
encouraged. Individuals will be required to show Rensselaer
identification when picking up tickets.

Any Aretha Franklin tickets unclaimed by 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December
4, will be released on a first-come, first-served basis to campus
community members standing by. Unclaimed Joshua Bell tickets will be
released to standby at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. Individuals
will be required to show Rensselaer identification.  The standby line
will be located outside the EMPAC east campus entrance. Unclaimed
tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. One
ticket will be available for each person in line, subject to
availability.

Please plan to join the festivities of this special time in the history
of Rensselaer.

I think whether or not I try to get some tickets from the standby line will be determined by if I can find all white clothes to wear for whiteout or not.

I stood in the standby line for an hour and a half but I GOT IN! That was a fantastic show. It’s too bad I saw way too many faculty and “trustees” and not enough students, however! It was really amazing to see the concert hall light up with so much happiness and joy and enthusiasm. We need more of that to permeate the entire campus!
